I have had this little heater for over one year. The first time I used it was in a tent trailer and it was a bad experience. The heater stunk the whole trailer with a strong pungent oil odor. The trailer was cold to begin with and I had to open the door and windows to air it out. Some camping friends with experience with these type of heaters explained you needed to burn off the oil residue in the heater to get rid of the odor. I burned one 16oz can on the heater outdoors overnight and this got rid of the oil odor. My advise with this heater is to try it out first at home in the garage or another outside building and break it in before taking it with you on a camping outing.Aside from this initial bad experience, this is a great little portable heater that suits my camping needs.

Small heater puts out alot of heat. I have been using it for several months to knock the chill off in my hunting stand (a shooting house). Lights quickly and and is very silent. Initially had a new burning scent until the factory oils from manufacturing burned off, but is now very clean burning.

I bought this heater to put into my portable one man ice shelter. It's great. I've fished when it's -20 outside, but kept it a nice 32F inside. It takes up no room, it's a snap to use, and love the idea of not having the open flame.

As other reviews have noted, the first thing to do with this heater is to set it up outside and burn off on the odor. I let a full tank burn off and the odor was entirely gone. I don't think I could stand it inside a tent with that odor. With regard to the heat output, you can get a heater with a higher heat output and have it last half as long (about 6 hours), or get this one with somewhat lower heat output and have it last twice as long (approx 12 hours). I go for the length for a couple of reasons. One is that I use this for winter camping, and have a reasonable size 2-person tent. The heater increased the temperature from about 11 degrees outside to a comfortable level inside--probably in the 30s (I don't really need it warmer given all the gear you use anyway for winter camping). But a few things to remember when using it in a tent. One is that you have to vent the tent more than without a heater, so some of the heat will escape. Second is that the temperature at the ground is very different than the temperature at the ceiling of the tent.I thought it was completely silent, and for me it is also important that it does not run out in the middle of the night. Finally, with temperatures in the teens, all the water would freeze and the cooking gas canisters get gummed up, which makes the next morning a problem. With this heater, I had none of those problems. In terms of the design, the plastic feet rotate out and provide a very stable footprint, but the two pieces (top and bottom) are a little clunky to pack as they don't really fit together without the bottle. I also wonder whether there could be a type of cage that fits over the heater area on top just in case it got pushed against the wall of the tent or something accidentally fell on top. However, those are not as important as the simplicity and long operating time. I am pleased with the purchase.

I bought this device because I like to camp out in the White Mountains region where it gets pretty cold at night especially in early spring and fall. It's easy and safe to use and keep my tent nice and cozy even when the temperature falls below 40 degree outside. I was surprise that it's a little bit noisier than my older SportCat model though.

This little heater is great..I work in an office in my unheated Garage and running electric heaters is far to expensive...This little heater get VERY hot..it seems to get as hot as the BlackCat .It gets so hot its hard to heep your hands over the elemnt for any extended period!!....but is stingier on propane use..It can run almost 2 full days using on one propane bottle thats about $6 a week or $24 a month..running an electric heater would be 5X times the cost.......obviously not for heating large rooms but for a taking the edge off a cold work place its ideal ...the stand makes it very stable..the product gives off more of an initial odor than the blackcat but this goes aways after about an hour after first use..I only wish I could turn the heat to a lower setting!!...no kidding!!... its a powerfull unit..dont hesitate..Coleman always provides great value in their products and this is no exception!! great job!

This heater works great, just light it with a match and turn it off when you no longer need it. Nice and simple.

Thanks for great info from other reviewers! I use this heater in a small 5x5x6 photo blind. It really does take the edge off of the cold but it IS a small heater. Don't expect it to turn your tent into a sauna. If you want to winter camp at 10 above zero and sleep in your undies you need more than 1500 BTU's!Having said that I can only verify previous reviews.1.) It needs broken in but the odor wasn't THAT bad and I saw no indication of soot or other sort of black smoke, etc. After using up one bottle - it now burns without odor of any kind.2.) Real numbers for you. Outside temp was 28 degrees, blind stayed at about 50 degrees with 6 sq. in of window venting.3.) It is easy to light - glad mine doesn't have the piezo button lighter. Just something to break!4.) Out of the box, the plastic housing had one screw that needed snugged up a little.5.) It breaks down to three parts for transport but I just fold in the four stabilizer legs and grab the handle. Finally, I am not a heating expert but I am told that the byproducts of the catalytic propane heater are carbon DIoxide (CO2) and water (H2O) with only a trace of the dangerous carbon MONoxide (CO) produced. Follow the Coleman manual by providing 6 sq. inches of ventilation and enjoy this safe, modern tent heater all night long.

Works great, it keeps my hunting shack 6x6x6 warm enough that I can hunt in just my sweat shirt.in about 20-25 degree weather.

I am glad I bought this before our camping trip in September. Nights were already getting cold and this was a good added warmth to the tent. The first night, I was worried about leaving it on as we went to sleep and kept waking up to check on it. The rest of the trip - no worries, slept like a baby. It's great if you don't have kids who might tip it over. Even though the instructions say not to leave it on through the night, I did and I was fine. I did use the tip of others to first light it and let it burn out in the open air for 30-60 minutes before you light it in an enclosed area as the factory fumes are quite nasty. Also, be careful with it inside your tent as I by accident let a flap of the tent touch it and it made a hole instantly. Nothing serious that a patch couldn't fix, but I will be careful next time. In general - great product, maybe my next one will be the more expensive version that you can point in various directions, but for now this will do.
