This is the brightest MR16 LED that I've been able to find, and I like the clean white light that it puts out. So if you really need something bright, this might be worth considering.But there are Cons:- It takes a second or so for these to come on when cold, and a fraction of a second even when warm. One of the things I like about LED's is that they are truly instant on; but this one isn't, and in a room with 22 LED bulbs this guy sticks out like a sore thumb because of the delay. I've noticed this same thing on another Philips A19 LED.- A fan, really? I didn't see anything on the packaging about these guys having a fan inside, and the noise is noticable even with only ONE of these bulbs in the room. I can't imagine having multiple of them, and I don't plan to add more (I may return this one). I absolutely would not have bought it if I realized it had a fan in it.- The front lens sticks out from the mounting rim, requiring that you remove any glass lens in your MR16 track head. And even then I had a hard time getting it to fit.- The spread angle is not documented on the package that I can find, but these seem like a more narrow angle than I wanted (spot or narrow flood). Mine is track mounted about 9 feet above the floor, and in the light pattern on the floor there is a pretty defined hot spot about 4 feet across.EDIT: I ended up returning the Philips and getting the Sylvania 78492 6W MR16 instead (http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-78492-LED6MR16-NFL25-Flood/dp/B00467C1VY/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top). It isn't as bright, but all things considered I like it better. It comes on instantly, makes no noise, and has a broader and more even light spread.
I am not currently using a dimmer switch so I cannot speak to that and do understand the concerns above about at what level of draw will induce flickering. It's a big issue as most transformers were not built for LED lights which means manufacturers have to be tricky about how to provide a cost effective solution to supply light from a 60Hz grid (us humans see flickering below around 85Hz)and if anyone has been in an old house we know it is even harder to use LED and/or CFL bulbs without having lots of issues.Anyway. The three I have are used in a 5 bulb track light. There are still two traditional halogen MR16s up there with them and I've tried quite a few "cheap" LED units which all produced flickering. These Philips are 5-7x the cost of my cheap LED MR16s but they *WORK* and in my opinion work well enough to recommend to anyone who does not need to use a dimmer or can understand they might flicker at low draws.I will add photos of a disassembled unit so we can all look at the cute little fan in there.* Update 2012-04-25Both track light sets (5 bulbs each) are running on dimmers that were marketed as "LED friendly". They cost about $22.00 each at the local hardware store. The dimming feature is REALLY NICE as these can be overly bright. In fact, in my livingroom area I might consider the same Philips Dimmable LED bulbs at a lower wattage, if needed I could perform surgery under these. Direct light from them can be uncomfortable. Might try to place something on the plastic to diffuse the light.
Update: I called Philips @ 18005550050 (option 1), and asked for information. There are two lines of these lamps, Endura and Ambient. The Endura are the commercial, longer life product. They have lists of compatible dimmers etc, showing tests for 1, 3, 5 and 8 lamps. Guess what, it depends on the model of dimmer and lamp, how many lamps you can have before it flickers. The beam spread angles available are 15,24,36 degrees. Not what I expected from a 'flood' lamp. Customer Service @ Philips can't yet get any product information from Engineering on the Ambient lamps, only for the Endura lamps.2 of 6 units purchased have fan vibration by the next day.I didn't find a beam spread/angle spec, probably less than 60. At about 21" the light fell off substantially (<1/3 of center) by 8" radius.These lamps are significantly cheaper at HD, as of this writing they are 33.When used with a Hampton Bay track and a Lutron Skylark Contour CTCL-153PDH-WH dimmer there is instability/flashing and it varies by load (1 track of 3 works better than 2 tracks of 3) despite being well within rating limit.Minor modification was needed to work with the track fixtures. The retainer clips needed a 1/4" trimmer off each end to not interfere with the lamp. The fixture is designed to use a non-fanned lamp and has a removable UV filter that cannot be used (and isn't technically needed for LED) with these lamps. However there is at least an 1/8" of play between the clip and the lamp allowing the lamp to move in the housing. This isn't critical.
I've tried several MR16 LEDs over the past few years. They keep getting better and better, and this one I believe is currently the brightest of them. It emits a bright white light (cooler color than a halogen) in a "narrow flood" pattern. There are, however, three important issues to note:1) Shape. This bulb has a protruding lens for the LEDs. This means that you most likely will have to remove the glass filter that comes on most MR16 fixtures. In some cases, you might find that the protrusion will prevent the bulb from fitting properly.2) Color inconsistency. I bought three of these, and each of them is a slightly different color--warmer or cooler. It is not noticeable unless you are looking for it, but if that is important to you then beware.3) Worst of all: NOISE. I had no idea, but these bulbs actually have a small cooling fan inside of them. The noise produced by the fan is faint, but you can definitely hear it, and with multiple bulbs on, it becomes very annoying (like someone is running a laptop in the room). This is a dealbreaker for certain applications (like a quiet bedroom), so be sure you can deal with some noise if you get these bulbs.
