These hybrid heaters are excellent. I replaced my Whirlpool standard; it had a 12 year warranty and broke after 6, but ignoring the warranty and replacing with the hybrid was more cost effective.I purchased a nearly identical model (50 gallon version), the GeoSpring directly from Lowes. It was plumbing and electric plug compatible and except for the weight (over 200 lbs.) was a breeze to install myself (WARNING: Don't try to move it alone - I nearly dropped it. VERY HEAVY. In California there is a requirement to secure it to a wall.) You also need to either pipe the water runnoff from the compressor to a sump well or to a container you would empty periodically like a dehumidifier. I ran half-inch PVC along the wall to a sump pump - trivial plumbing job. If you have a heat pump with similar run-off the two devices can share the discharge pump if located nearby.The unit has a front panel with buttons and LCD display and LED indicator lights that enables you to select the temperature and efficiency mode, including a "vacation" mode, with ease, not like old models where you have to open a cover, turn the unit off, and turn a screw to reset the water temperature.The GeoSpring was on sale at Lowes for $999 AND there is currently a $300 FEDERAL TAX CREDIT for buying one. So at an actual cost of only $700, plus hundreds of dollars per year saved on electricity, purchasing the hybrid is a no-brainer for the budget-minded.Not only does the hybrid heater do a great job of heating water, but it also cools the surrounding air when in normal or high efficiency mode and dries the air, reducing the demand on the basement dehumidifier and A/C. You can switch to standard electric mode if you don't want that feature, but it will consume normal amounts of electricity. It also has a "high demand" mode which I've tried and it works very well - no cold showers for anyone on busy mornings (we have 6 people living at home, youngest is 13 - i.e., long showers ....)I haven't seen the electric bill yet, but official and reasonable claims are that it uses 62% less electricity, which can save several hundred dollars per year on the electric bill. Also because it doubles as an air chiller and dehumidifier, it will save even more in the summer.
I purchased this from Amazon 2 weeks ago because they had the best price and no stores stock this as a grab and go. We intend to use this in heat pump mode only that is the reason we chose the 80 gallon model, the government electric version ( GeoSpring ) is only 50 gallons so you can easily find the need to run the expensive inductive heat elements. This water heater is branded "American Water Heater" but is imported from China by A.O. Smith. I did know it was an A.O. smith product but I was unaware that it was made in China. After a quick disappointment I reminded myself that all of my American made water heaters have prematurely failed (6 or 7 years, like a clock), so maybe its time to try something different. Things to keep in mind would include the cold air that it produces; I am in Ca. so it's a good thing but might not be for everyone also the height is over 80 inches so it might not fit in some applications. I would not use this in a residential closet; A garage or large utility room would work much better. The noise is not that bad but I did notice that the filter is too restrictive and has plastic molding flaws that keep the air from moving freely. The noise is greatly reduced when the filter is off so I might call in for a new filter or make a better one on my own. It looks like it draws about 1100 watts when running and after a 15 gallon draw it runs for about 1:20 minutes to get back to temp, but with 80+ gallons this should work fine in economy mode for most applications. Also you must keep in mind that the installation of this heater will cost more than the standard do to the weight, extra drain lines and maybe a electical run if you are changing from a gas heater. So far I am pleased with it and stats are approximate but I will update when I have more time with it.
